Drawing Fish – An Animation

This piece started as a sketch meant to highlight my skills in After Effects. I began by drawing the concept, then separated each element into layers using Illustrator. The final idea: a hand sketching waves while a fish leaps out of the water. It's simple, expressive, and driven by motion storytelling.

A short After Effects animation: a hand draws rippling waves, and a fish bursts out mid-motion.

Project Overview

This project combines hand-drawn illustration with motion design in After Effects. I wanted to tell a brief, charming story by animating a drawing hand and a jumping fish. I used layered assets from Illustrator, animated with puppet pins and smooth easing, to build expressive motion and polished transitions. It helped refine my animation pipeline from sketch to final render.

Creative Process

  • Step 1: Sketched a minimal scene focused on rhythm, timing, and emotion.
  • Step 2: Broke down key elements into separate layers in Illustrator.
  • Step 3: Animated the hand and fish using puppet tools and easing in After Effects.
  • Step 4: Polished timing, added subtle FX, and rendered the final version.
